The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, displays sculpture, ceramics and paintings from the Pisan School paintings is to be found along the riverfront beside the Palazz dei Medici. If you are planning to do a lot of museums and art visit, it is advisable to get a joint ticket. Most of the major works of art from the churches of the city have been removed and placed here. These works include a peculiarly upbeat crucifixion by Gozzoli, a painting of St Paul by Masaccio and another Crucifixion by Turino Vanni that for some reason includes the Leaning Tower with its original inclination. The sculpture collection has two works that arenot to be missed, the gilded bronze bust of San Lussorio by Donatello, and Madonna del Latte by Pisano, a sculpture of Mary breastfeeding the baby Jesus. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is near the Leaning Tower. Here you will find Giovanni Pisano's Madonna del Colloquio, notable for the intense gazes exchanged by the Madonna and Child. You will also find the Pisan Cross, used as a standard by the Pisan forces on their march into Jerusalem. The Museo delle Sinopie, inaugurated in 1979, is found on the south side of the Duomo. The museum is named after the treauses it hosts, the sinopie or monochrome sketches over which frescoes are painted. These came to light after fire damage in 1944 wreaked the Camposanto and separated the frescoes to reveal the hidden parts of the work. |
