RESTAURANTS

Avoid restaurants in the area of the Leaning Tower as they are not good value. Head a few
blocks south, around Piazza Cavalieri and Piazza Dante, where you'll find local places whose
kitchens serve up standard Tuscan fare along with Pisan dishes, including baccalà alla Pisana
(dried cod).
Bruno , Via Bianchi 12 (tel 050.560.818). Closed Mon eve & Tues. Northeast of the Leaning
Tower, this traditional antica trattoria is known for its Pisan cuisine although it is a little pricey.
La Grotta , Via San Francesco 103 (tel 050.578.105). Closed for lunch and all day Sun.
Comfortable, quiet old osteria in a cave-like setting, with the motto "wine, bread and
company".
La Mescita , Via Cavalca 2. Closed Mon, and Tues & Wed lunch. This small restaurant is an
academic institution, patronized by students and professors alike. Reasonably priced.
Osteria dei Cavalieri , Via San Frediano 16 (tel 050.580.858). Closed Sat lunch & Sun.
Wonderful food expertly cooked in a tranquil setting. Both fish and meat dishes are to be
recommended and the inexpensive set menus are worth a try.
Al Ristoro dei Vecchi Macelli , Via Volturno 49 (tel 050.20.424). Closed Sun lunch & Wed. This
restaurant has a reputation as the best restaurant in the city and as such it is a little more
pricey but well worth it with an extensive menu of sophisticated Tuscan dishes.
Il Vecchio Dado , Lungarno Pacinotti 21 (tel 050.580.900). Closed Wed & Thurs lunch. Friendly
atmosphere on the waterfront with good food (the fish dishes are excellent) in a lively setting.
The pizza is also good.
Al Ristoro dei Vecchi Macelli, Via Volturno, 49, (Tel. 059-20424), Closed Sunday lunchtime and
Wednesdays. A cozy environment, with delicious home made pastas, (don't miss the tortelli
